Feeding and background
Horses lose sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium in sweat. Electrolyte supplements are fed to help replace what is lost through work, travel and hot weather, supporting normal hydration as part of sensible management.
When electrolytes are usually fed
Most owners feed electrolytes after schooling, competition, hunting, long journeys or in warm, humid conditions where the horse has sweated noticeably. Horses in light work on a balanced diet with free access to a salt lick often need very little extra.
Feeding notes
Fresh, clean water must always be available before, during and after feeding electrolytes. Add to damp feed or dissolve in water, and never feed to a dehydrated horse that has no access to water. Some horses prefer their electrolytes split across two smaller servings.
Things to check first
Speak to your vet if your horse is not drinking normally, sweats unusually, or seems dull or off colour after work. Electrolytes support normal hydration; they are not a treatment for dehydration or illness.
