Feeding and background

Vitamin E is an essential fat-soluble vitamin found naturally in fresh growing grass. Levels fall sharply in conserved forage, so it is commonly fed to horses on limited turnout, on a mainly hay-based diet, or in consistent work.

Why owners feed vitamin E

Fresh pasture is the horse's natural source of vitamin E, and the vitamin degrades quickly once grass is cut and stored. Owners typically feed it to stabled horses, horses on restricted grazing, horses fed mainly hay or haylage through winter, and horses in regular work, to support normal muscle function and everyday wellbeing.

Feeding notes

Vitamin E is fat soluble, so it is best fed with a small amount of oil or a feed containing some fat to support normal absorption. Mix into damp feed and keep the container sealed away from light and heat. Check what is already in your balancer or hard feed so the total daily intake stays sensible.

Things to check first

Speak to your vet before introducing new supplements, especially if your horse is pregnant, competing, taking medication or has a diagnosed condition. If you compete, check current rules with your governing body.
